We'll answer your questions about Shirakawago World Heritage Site．
Q: Why are Shirakawago “Gassho-zukuri (“prayer-hands” construction)” houses built in such a unique style?
A: The “Gassho-zukuri” houses have a steeply sloped roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The structure is so designed to make a big room inside and to prevent snow to pile up outside, so as to protect the wooden structure against the weight of the heavy snow.
Q: What is the roof of the “Gassho-zukuri” houses made of?
A: They are made of thatch (dried silver grass etc.). They are replaced every thirty to forty years and about twenty lorry-load of thatch is needed every time.
Q: Do people still live in the “Gassho-zukuri” houses?
A: Yes. People still live in the “Gassho-zukuri” houses and lead a fairly normal life there. Such “living” World Heritage Site is very unique and cannot be found in other places. It’s amazing that the small village of Shirakawago with a population of only 2,000 people attracts more than one million visitors every year.
Q: Do the local people have comfortable life in Shirakawago? Are there any hospitals or schools there?
A: The people live quite comfortably in Shirakawago. There are two medical clinics (one in the ground of the World Heritage Site), one primary school and one junior high school there.
Q: I want to go to Shirakawago on my own, not with a tour. Is it possible?
A: It is possible but just a return train ticket to Shirakawago from Tokyo costs you about 30,000JPY: 27,080JPY for a return train fare from Tokyo to Takayama and 4,800JPY for a return local bus fare to Shirakawago from Takayama. Definitely, going to Shirakawago with a tour is better.
Q:When does it snow in Shirakawago?
A: Usually, it starts to snow from the end of November to the beginning of December. You can see a large pile-up of snow between January and February and lingering snow until April. Shirakawago is designated as a “Heavy Snow Area” and, at some parts, snow accumulates well over 2 metres. Viewing such snow is another tourist attraction.
Q: When can we see the famous Shirakawago light illumination?
A: You can see Shirakawago light illumination in January and February every year.

Season of "Shiba Sakura”

After sakura(cherry blossom), there comes the season of shiba sakura(moss phlox). Shiba sakura is a perennial creeper plant, belonging to a phlox family. It grows thickly to a height of 10 cms. They have long and hard leaves throughout the year with vivid pink, red or white flowers from mid April to mid June. The flowers look like sakura cherry blossom. That is why they have come to be called “shiba sakura”.
Shiba sakura this year will surely please the eyes of viewers as usual. If you have not viewed them yet, visit the parks below. You will be marvelled at the beautiful sights there!

Do you know a precocious cherry blossom variety kawazu sakura? Compared with someiyoshino, the most common cherry blossom variety, kawazu sakura has brighter pink petals, and bloom earlier by a month and longer by a month.
From the beginning of February to the beginning of March, about two million people visit Kawazu in Izu Peninsula, about three hours and a half from Tokyo by coach, to see them. Some people see them in Ooi Matsuda in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is reached in less than two hours from Tokyo.（Tour code:05577）

Cherry blossoms bloom earlier or later depending on the temperature. If you wish to have good views, get blooming info first. You can get it on the websites of the regions you are interested in. Or you could ask them in person by phone. Usually about one week after the blooming date, cherry blossoms get in full bloom, which is for many people the best viewing time. If you are interested in our cherry blossom tours, contact us at any time. We will try our best to give you as much information as you need.

Q: Why are Shirakawago “Gassho-zukuri (“prayer-hands” construction)” houses built in such a unique style?
A: The “Gassho-zukuri” houses have a steeply sloped roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The structure is so designed to make a big room inside and to prevent snow to pile up outside, so as to protect the wooden structure against the weight of the heavy snow.
Q: What is the roof of the “Gassho-zukuri” houses made of?
A: They are made of thatch (dried silver grass etc.). They are replaced every thirty to forty years and about twenty lorry-load of thatch is needed every time.
Q: Do people still live in the “Gassho-zukuri” houses?
A: Yes. People still live in the “Gassho-zukuri” houses and lead a fairly normal life there. Such “living” World Heritage Site is very unique and cannot be found in other places. It’s amazing that the small village of Shirakawago with a population of only 2,000 people attracts more than one million visitors every year.
Q: Do the local people have comfortable life in Shirakawago? Are there any hospitals or schools there?
A: The people live quite comfortably in Shirakawago. There are two medical clinics (one in the ground of the World Heritage Site), one primary school and one junior high school there.
Q: I want to go to Shirakawago on my own, not with a tour. Is it possible?
A: It is possible but just a return train ticket to Shirakawago from Tokyo costs you about 30,000JPY: 27,080JPY for a return train fare from Tokyo to Takayama and 4,800JPY for a return local bus fare to Shirakawago from Takayama. Definitely, going to Shirakawago with a tour is better.
Q: When does it snow in Shirakawago?
A: Usually, it starts to snow from the end of November to the beginning of December. You can see a large pile-up of snow between January and February and lingering snow until April. Shirakawago is designated as a “Heavy Snow Area” and, at some parts, snow accumulates well over 2 metres. Viewing such snow is another tourist attraction.
Q: When can we see the famous Shirakawago light illumination?
A: In 2013, you can see Shirakawago light illumination on the following days from 17:30 to 19:30.
