There are quite a number of grape varieties and 30-40 varieties are cultivated in Japan alone. According to the colour of the skin, grapes are classified into 3 kinds: red grape, black grape and green grape. All of them are green at first but red and black grapes change the colour as they grow mature. Meanwhile the green grapes stay in green as they do not bear pigment. It is widely known that grapes have a broad range of efficacy: relieving fatigue, restoring vision (red grapes), preventing high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis. They are harvested from July through October.

■ How to choose a delicious grape　
Choose a cluster that has a thick green stem born with firm-fleshed berries. A brownish stem is a sign that the cluster is not fresh enough. Some berries have white powdery substance called “bloom” on the surface. This substance protects the berries from dehydration. The one covered fully with “bloom” is very fresh. Black and red grapes in deep colour, green grapes in yellow, are more delicious.
