Strawberry Picking Season has just come to Japan!

Japanese strawberries are not only tasty but also nutritious as containing a lot of vitamin C and thus are one of the most popular fruits among children and adults alike. They are highly admired overseas as well and are exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and many other countries. Japanese strawberries get ripe from December to May. They are mainly produced in Tochigi ,Fukuoka and Shizuoka but are also produced in various parts of Japan. During the season, a lot of strawberry picking tours are running. Q: I am planning to go to Shirakawago on my own. Is it possible?
A: The nearest station from Shirakawago is Takayama on the JR Line. After getting off the train, you still have to sit on a local bus for about 50 minutes. The bus ticket for one-way is 2400JPY, for a return ticket at 4500JPY.
　Considering time and money, taking a bus tour from Tokyo or Osaka is far better.


Q:Do the local people still live in the Gassho-zukuri houses(“prayer-hands” construction style buildings)?
A: Yes. About 2,000 people still live in the houses and lead a fairly normal life in the village. There is no　such “living” World Heritage site other than Shirakawago. Now, the small village attracts more than 1 million　visitors yearly.


Q: What is the roof of the Gassho-zukuri houses made of?
A: They are made of thatch(dried silver grass etc.). They are replaced every 30 to 40 years. An entire roof needs 20 lorryload of thatch.


Q: When does Shirakawago see snow?
A: Shirakawago usually sees the first snow from the end of November to the beginning of December. Snow piles up the greatest amount in January and February and lingers until April. Shirakawago belongs to the “Heavy Snow Area” in Japan and, at some parts, snow accumulates well over 2 metres. Viewing the snowscape is one of the many attractions of Shirakawago.


Q: When is Shirakawago illuminated by lights?
A: It is planned from 17:30 to 19:30 next January to February. The dates are as follows.
January: 21(Sat.), 28(Sat.)
February: 4(Sat.), 5(Sun.), 11(Sat.), 12(Sun.), 18(Sat.)

Q: Why do Shirakawago houses have such a unique style Gassho-zukuri?
A: The Gassho-zukuri houses have a steeply slanting roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. This shape allows the houses to have a highly efficient space inside while letting go of the snow outside, preventing the snow to pile up on the roof.

All About “CRABs ～ Japanese Winter Speciality”


Japan is the home of CRABs. Various kinds of crabs are caught in Japan especially from autumn to winter, which is the season for crab feast for the Japanese. What about appreciate freshly caught crabs in season? Today, you will know all about crabs that can be appreciated in winter Japan.




Taraba-gani(red king crab)
Taraba-gani lives in the seas of low water temperature below 10 degrees. Along with Ke-gani and Hanasaki-gani, Taraba-gani is the speciality crab of Hokkaido. It is a very large species and grows to a leg span of as long as 1 metre. The legs are packed with delicious meat.


Ke-gani(horsehair crab)
Ke-gani lives in a wider area from the coast of Alaska to the Bering Sea, the Sea of Japan and Hokkaido. As well as Taraba-gani, Ke-gani is one of the most expensive crab species in Japan. The most significant feature is that the entire body is covered with short horsehair-like-objects. That’s why it is called Ke-gani(horsehair crab). Ke-gani contains a lot of brown meat as well as white meat、both of which taste wonderful. Eating Ke-gani is relatively easy as it has a softer shell.

Zuwai-gani(snow crab)
Zuwai-gani is well known as the winter delicacies of the Sea of Japan. The Zuwai-gani fishing season begins in November and its catch is the biggest in amount among various kinds of crabs in Japan. The entire body is in deep red and the shell is triangular in shape. It has long legs, especially the female ones whose leg span stretches up to 70 centimetres. It tastes relatively light and delicately sweet.

Hanasaki-gani(flower bloom crab)
Hanasaki-gani is caught at Nemuro Peninsula in the east Hokkaido. It can be eaten throughout the year, but the best season is from September through November. Hanasaki-gani is so named because, when being boiled, it turns red as if a red flower suddenly blooms. It has a hard shell with sharp projections covering the entire surface, making you eat it rather difficult.



■Do you know how the Japanese eat crabs?
Crab dishes are usually expensive in Japan. The most common way of relishing crabs among the Japanese is very simple: first boil or grill fresh crabs, then dip them in a mayonnaise or vinegared soy sauce, and lastly eat them as they are. They are called Yude-gani(boiled crab) and Yaki-gani(grilled crab) respectively. However, there are other ways of appreciating the crabs. Some of the most common crab dishes are: Tempura, Sashimi, Sushi, Arai, Salad, Soup, Hot pot, Gratin, Ramen noodles, Sunomono(vinegared dish), Zosui(rice soup), Shumai(dumpling), Chawanmushi(steamed custard) and a lot more.








■Do you know how to distinguish delicious crabs?
（１） Colour
　Choose a crab with a radiant shell in bright red. Usually, a drab, greyish one is rather stale.
（２） Weight
Take a crab, and if you have a feeling of massiveness, or a feeling of heaviness, regardless of its size, then it is crammed with fresh and firm meat.
（３） Hardness
A crab with a hard shell and hard legs has a lot of meat inside. On the contrary, the one with a softer shell and softer legs is the one that has just shed the shell and thus do not have a lot of meat inside nor taste good.
（４） Smell
Avoid a crab that smells bad, especially at the body part. It is the sign of going bad soon.
